WHY JOIN BALM?
You will become a Member of an organisation which, as the major UK representative of lawyers in mediation, will work for you in promoting the concept of mediation, the role of lawyers in mediation and your needs and aspirations as a lawyer/mediator in the developing field.

BALM is and will become increasingly involved in policy making and relations with regulators and others.

Through its information facilities and membership network BALM will enable Members to meet, exchange and receive ideas and advice on how best to adopt to and make the most of the opportunities that mediation can offer them and their clients.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership is open to any solicitor, barrister, judge, advocate, legal executive or paralegal who practices in the United Kingdom, provided (with some exceptions) they are at least 35 years old and have undergone recognised mediator training by an approved body.

Associate membership is open to any lawyer who wishes to acquire the necessary experience and training to qualify as a Member, or just for further information about developments in mediation.

SUBSCRIPTION RATES
Current subscription rates are £50 for Membership, and £50 for Associate Membership.

OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of BALM are, inter alia:

  • to promote the concept of mediation
  • to promote the role of lawyer/mediator in mediation
  • to assist in the maintenance of standards in training and practice for mediators
  • to maintain a register of supervisors approved by the Association and to provide facilities for regular supervision and case consultation
  • to assist lawyer/mediators in the development of mediation services in their practices
  • to work with other organisations in the promotion and marketing of mediation services
  • to provide opportunities and facilities for members to meet and exchange views and ideas.
